What qualifies as a dental emergency?
There are certain clear signs that will determine if you are experiencing a dental emergency.
- shooting, severe pain
- Blood
- Knocked out tooth
- A chipped tooth with sharp edges
- An infection like an abscess, which can be potentially fatal if ignored
- Loose tooth as an adult
What is not a dental emergency?
- Slight pain - monitor and schedule an appointment
- A chipped tooth without pain and no fracture leading up to the gums
- A lost filling or crown can wait a couple of days; try to keep food and debris out of the area
What to do if you have knocked out a tooth:
Do not panic. There are a few steps you need to take if you have knocked out a tooth, so act quickly. Collect all the fragments of the tooth and rinse them off. Place the tooth back in the socket if possible, unless it is a child’s tooth. Putting a child’s tooth back in after it has been knocked out could potentially damage the developing adult teeth underneath the surface. If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, put it in milk to help preserve it until you get to our office.
Call our Honolulu emergency dentist right away and try to get here within 30 minutes of losing the tooth. If you get to the office within this window, there is a higher chance we can save the tooth. If not, other restorative options are available to perserve your smile.
What is a tooth abscess?
If you are experiencing severe pain from one direct area of your teeth, you may have a tooth abscess. This must be treated as soon as possible because it may be detrimental to your smile if left untreated.
A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus underneath the tooth near the roots. It leads to tooth sensitivity, fever, swelling in the face, and tender lymph nodes in the neck. Call Hawaii Cosmetic Dental immediately if you think you may be suffering from a tooth abscess.
If you're suffering from any of the emergency-related issues mentioned above, please call our emergency dentist in Honolulu HI at (808) 988-3500. Dr. Rosala and our team will quickly provide you with the next steps to take to protect your smile.
