If you've had root canal therapy in the past and have maintained proper dental care, most teeth can last as long as your natural teeth. However, 5% of the time, a tooth may not heal as expected.
There is an array of reasons why you may need Endodontic Retreatment:
- narrow of curved canals were not treated during the initial procedure
- complicated canal anatomy went undetected
- the placement of the crown (or other restoration) was too delayed from the procedure
- the restoration didn't prevent salivary contamination to the inside of the tooth
- new decay can expose the root canal filling material to bacteria, causing a new infection
- a loose, cracked, or broken crown/filling can expose the tooth to new infection
- a tooth fractures
How It's Done
Dr. Rosala will reopen you tooth, and, if necessary, disassemble and remove a crown, post, or other restorative materials. Using magnification and illumination, he will then clean the canals and carefully examine the inside of the tooth. He'll be on the look out for additional canals or unusual anatomy. He'll then fill and seal the canals and place a temporary filling.
If the tooth canals are unusually narrow or blocked, you may be a candidate for endodontic surgery to allow the other end of the tooth root to be sealed.
During a second visit, Dr. Rosala will place a new crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect it and allow full function moving forward.
