Osseous Surgery is done so Dr. Rosala can look at the root of a tooth and clean the decayed areas due to periodontal (gum) disease.

 

Periodontal (gum) disease is a result of bacteria and plaque build-up between the teeth and gums. After the bacteria and plaque are cleaned out, enlarged pockets between the teeth and gums will remain. While the gaps can affect your smile cosmetically, Dr. Rosala is most concerned about the future risk of tooth and gum disease because bacteria and plaque will find their way back into that enlarged pocket.

 

Once the roots are cleaned, Dr. Rosala may need to reshape the bone surround the teeth. If the defects are severe the deformed bone may be removed or added to, through Osseous Grafting, prior to reshaping the reaming bone.

 

After the decayed portions are completely removed and the bone is back to normal, through Osseous Surgery and Osseous Grafting, the gum pocket may remain. Dr. Rosala may then need to suture the gum, using Gum Pocket Reduction, in order to reduce the size of the pocket so it is no longer a breeding ground for bacteria and plaque, thus completely correcting the problem.
